Willig the team’s immediate backup at both guard and tackle has been fighting a leg injury all season. Prior to the game a MRI revealed that Willig has an infection in his lower right leg. He played in the game opener so as not to let his team down. Willig underwent an arthroscopic procedure on Friday to drain fluid from the swollen and discolored part of the leg. The procedure helps clear up the infection faster.
Willig will have nine and a half days to heal before the 49ers second game against the Broncos, but more than likely he will miss the game. Should that be the case, Rookie Eric Heitmann may see his first action of the season, rotating into the offensive line to allow players to freshen up a little.
