Vinny Gone; Returner Spot Open August 28 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise THIS CONTENT IS COPYWRITED, REDISTRIBUTION OF IT (including copy/pasting it to a message board, forum or bbs) IS PROHIBITED AND COULD RESULT IN LEGAL ACTIONS - feel free to quote up to 1 paragraph providing a source link to http://www.49ersparadise.cjb.net is included The 49ers released Vinny Sutherland on Monday. The move was not exactly surprising given that he never brought the ‘flash’ to the special teams that the team was hoping for, and because he never really became a part of the 49ers offense as the fifth receiver. With Sutherland gone, both the kick return and punt return spots are open. Jimmy Williams and Cedrick Wilson appear to be the front runners for the position. Both players have done a fairly good job at both positions. Williams may have the edge, but had a slightly shaky performance in the team’s last pre-season game.
If Jamal Robertson makes the team as a running back, he should be given a longer look at returning kicks too. Robertson seemed to do a very good job when given the opportunity earlier this summer.
