New Stadium Name To Be Temporary May 15 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise Nobody wanted to see 3Com rename the 49ers stadium. Turns out the revenue generated from renaming the stadium was quite helpful to the team. But 3Com announced that they will no be renewing their contract with the team this year, and thus the 49ers stadium was nameless. Sure many people still call the stadium “The ‘Stick” or “Candlestick Park” but rightfully, that’s not the name. The 49ers are still hopping that a company will look to buy the naming rights to the stadium, but in the interim they, along with the city, have come up with a new name: “San Francisco Stadium at Candlestick Point”. It’s a little long, and not very catchy, but at least the mystique of “The ‘Stick” remains. Truth of the matter is that this name should be temporary. A further truth is that the 49ers should get a new stadium. The city passed a vote years ago to build the stadium, but with the Ownership changing within the organization and the downturn in the economy, the stadium plans never really progressed.
It’s time to get the show back on the road, the York’s should put forth plans to start building the stadium, and the name “San Francisco Stadium At Candlestick Point” should stick around until the new stadium is built. Think about it, if you are a company, would you rather stick your name on a dilapidated stadium like the 49ers currently play in, or on a bran new, state of the art stadium.
