Time To Sign Draft Picks May 14 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise With the team’s rookie mini-camp now only days away, it’s about time the team settled in and signed its draft picks. In years past the signing of the picks was often delayed because of salary cap concerns, but this year the team has ample room under the cap, and thus should try and get these guys signed as soon as possible. There is simply no reason the 49ers should chance a holdout from one of its draft picks because of no contract being signed yet. The team needs all of its talent on the field and practicing together in order to best grow as a team. The 49ers were lucky in years past to escape without many contract holdouts, (Lance Schulters is the only player that comes to mind), but that luck will not last forever.
Many draft picks have already been signed by others teams, and keeping their own guys waiting may not be the best way to start their careers. With more than $5 million in free space, the 49ers should ‘just do it’ already.
