Still Scratching Their Heads June 10 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise The 49ers brass must be wondering what they were doing drafting a kicker in the fourth round this season. Sure Chandler sounds like a good pick, and likely will have a successful NFL career, but it certainly seems that the team miss read what they had in Jose Cortez and Jamie Rheem. The 49ers are thus left with quite the dilemma at kicker. The team is trying to eliminate one from the mix before training camp - but the three are stuck in a dead heat. If the kickers are so indistinguishable in practice, what were the 49ers thinking about when they drafted another in the fourth round?
Certainly the 49ers want to bring consistency and greater ability to their special teams, but that fourth round pick may have been more useful as trade bait or to acquire a receiver, or another offensive or defensive lineman. The 49ers better hope that Chandler pans out for them, otherwise a seemingly good draft may have a negative connotation associated with it for quite some time.
