Rumph gets extra practice June 1 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise First round raft pick Mike Rumph was brought in to the team to help take down the Rams. The talented cornerback has had a productive off-season so far, but still needs to improve in some of the ‘off’ coverage schemes that the defense deploys. Rumph is expected to be a big part of the 49ers offense, as the first cornerback off the bench in nickel and dime situations. Rumph received an opportunity for some extra practice in the passing mini-camp that ended on Friday. As Jason Webster missed out on some practice time with a hamstring injury, Rumph was pushed into one of the starting cornerback positions. Rumph continued to show progress, and looks quite good in press coverage situations.
The rookie corner will continue to use every opportunity to improve. Playing in the starting defense gave him an excellent opportunity to hone his skills. Rumph however should be back to his regular third cornerback position when the 49ers open their final mini-camp next week.
