It's been an extremely busy week for the 49ers. Former 49er, and Redskin defensive tackle Dana Stubblefield came in early in the week, and thrilled coaches, and Bill Walsh with his abilities. The 49ers and "Stubby" are in contract negotiations that recessed for the holiday weekends.
Draft eligible, Deuce McAllister was in on Tuesday to show the 49ers why he is rated the number one running back in this years draft. McAllister seemed pretty happy with his workout with the team. However, the organization has said very little about the performance. On Friday night the Chargers extended 49ers place kicker Wade Richey a offer sheet. The 49ers have the option of matching the offer, as Richey is a free agent. If they don't do so by next Friday, and it's believed that they wont as the team doesn't have the extra $750 000 under the salary cap to do so, Richey will go to the Chargers, and the 49ers will receive no compensation. Charlie Garner was also snatched up by the Raiders to a four-year, ten million dollar deal. Chump change compared to what he was asking from the 49ers. The 49ers will have to fill this void with either Paul Smith, Terry Jackson, Jonas Lewis or somebody from the draft or a late free agent. On Saturday, legendary 49er RC Owens called it quits from his administrative position with the team. Owens retires from the 49ers leaving quite the legacy behind. The team is now interviewing for replacements.
A busy week for the 49ers, and it will likely pale in comparison to next week, when the draft begins. It's only seven days away from the rest of the 49ers future.
