Owens Nothing Short Of Average
May 4 2002
By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise
The votes are in, the ballots have been tabulated and the results are that Terrell Owens, a superstar on the football field is just average when it comes to playing basketball in the USBL. Owens made his first appearance in the league on Friday, and while he did sink a few, and play some good defense he really showed why his profession is football.

I respect Owens as an athlete. I think it takes huge guts for guys like Owens to try their hand at a second sport. It’s extremely physically demanding and takes a ton of athletic ability. Not to mention the toll it takes on your social life as you travel for nearly twelve months a year.

Truth of the matter is that there are very few Deion Sanders’, and Bo Jackson’s out there. Very few players who can excel at more than one sport. And although Owens has only played one game - in which he was clearly out of shape, it looks like Owens is not one of those special few. I’d be happy if he could prove me wrong, but for the time being I’ll stick to my opinion.

Owens is just another Michael Jordan (playing baseball of course). He’s a great athlete and can likely use that ability to be better than most at any sport. But when it comes to being with the elite, his game is football. It’s that simple really. I can’t say I’m disappointed in the results, I’d much rather he dedicates his time to football training rather than basketball training, and if this season continues as its started for him, my guess is he’ll be back training for football full time, faster than you can say, “Most athletes should play only one sport”. One game down, no injuries, let’s keep our fingers crossed.
