Jr Bryant Still A 49er
May 12 2002
By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise
A quick look down the 49ers roster, and one notices that Jr. Bryant, a very versatile defensive lineman is still on the 49ers roster. Bryant teamed well with Bryant Young inside at defensive tackle, and outside at defensive end until the third game in the 2000 season. Bryant was injured in that game, and has suited up to play football since, but the 31-year old is still on the 49ers team.

Bryant’s neck injury was later diagnosed as a bulging disk and he’s spent his time on the 49ers injured reserve ever since. The 49ers could save $650 000 by cutting Bryant after June 1st, but he would hit the cap in 2003 with a figured of nearly three million. If the 49ers release Bryant, they will likely come to some sort of injury settlement that would not effect the future cap as much.

Bryant is one of those guys you never want to see injured. An inspiration to all, Bryant battled back from severe burns he suffered as a child, to make the 49ers practice squad as an undrafted free agent. In 1995 he was promoted to the active roster.

The 49ers would love to be able to add Bryant back into its rotation along the defensive line. Unfortunately his injury will likely prevent him from ever playing again, and both sides are likely to ‘make do’ without each other. A very unfortunate ending seems to be in-store for this tragic hero.
