Increased Involvement At TE May 17 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise The 49ers finally have a secret weapon. His name is Eric Johnson, and he plays tight end. Since Brent Jones retired from the team, the tight end position on the 49ers has seen a reduced role. That is of course, until last season. With so many high profile names on the 49ers offense, having a safety blanket for Jeff Garcia is key to long term success. Johnson has proven to be remarkably talented, especially for a seventh round pick , and he provides that safety blanket for Garcia.
It’s likely that Mariucci and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp will begin to bring back the tight end as a key position to the West Coast Offense. Johnson still has plenty of room for improvement, but given this opportunity, he should be able to step up and become a difference maker in the NFL.
