Garcia To Sit August 28 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise THIS CONTENT IS COPYWRITED, REDISTRIBUTION OF IT (including copy/pasting it to a message board, forum or bbs) IS PROHIBITED AND COULD RESULT IN LEGAL ACTIONS - feel free to quote up to 1 paragraph providing a source link to http://www.49ersparadise.cjb.net is included Steve Mariucci is known as a conservative coach. Perhaps it’s for that reason that when he announced that Jeff Garcia likely won’t play in the pre-season finale today, nobody was really surprised. Garcia will take a seat on the bench, and watch as Tim Rattay gets in some extra practice. Terrell Owens and Garrison Hearst may not see any action in the game either. Mariucci simply wants to make sure that his core offensive threats are still able to play in the kick off game a week Thursday. The starting offensive line may only see limited action too. At this point its still unclear whether Jeremy Newberry and Ron Stone, both of who are returning from injury will see action. I suspect the offensive linew ill play a series, maybe two, before Mariucci takes them off the field.
Earlier this week I suggested that Mariucci sit all of his starting players. After all the team has already played in the normal four pre-season games, and with the 49ers playing so many games so close to each other, giving the starting players bodies some time to heal would be a good idea. Mariucci isn’t likely to take it to that extreme, but expect most if not all the starters to be on the bench by the time the second quarter roles around.
