Engelberger Still Has inside track June 11 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise Judging by some recent comments made by defensive coordinator Jim Mora Jr, it sounds like defensive end John Engelberger has the inside track to start opposite Andre Carter. Engelberger is entering his third season in the NFL, and has been battling defensive end Chike Okeafor for the starting position throughout his career. It certainly appears that Engelberger will improve his performance this coming season. Despite the 49ers being impressed with the improvements from Chike Okeafor this off-season, and the team signing free agent defensive lineman, Sean Moran, John Engelberger continues to be the 49ers best option across from Andre Carter. Throughout his time with the team, he has proven to have a nose for the football, and is constantly making plays happen, if not making them himself. “He’s only in his third year, but he was forced to start in his rookie season,” said defensive coordinator Jim Mora. “He should team up with Andre to be a really good set of defensive ends”
The faith in Engelberger is quite substantiated. He’s constantly proven to be better at the position than Chike Okeafor, and despite being a little undersized, he’s quite quick and very strong. The 49ers are looking to improve their pass rush this season, improved play from Engelberger off the edge will be key in doing just that.
