Defense Won’t Win Games September 20 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise THIS CONTENT IS COPYWRITED, REDISTRIBUTION OF IT (including copy/pasting it to a message board, forum or bbs) IS PROHIBITED AND COULD RESULT IN LEGAL ACTIONS - feel free to quote up to 1 paragraph providing a source link to http://www.49ersparadise.cjb.net is included The 49ers defense is better than last season. They are bringing the pass rush, and in general are doing a pretty good job. They did seem to fall apart a little at the end of the Bronco game, but that can be attributed to the amount of time they were on the field, given the lack of success of the offense. I firmly believe the 49ers defense is good, maybe even very good, but they aren’t great - and because of that, they shouldn’t be put in a situation where the 49ers need them to win games for them. The defense isn’t that strong yet. They are not at the level of winning a game for an unproductive offense. They simply aren’t that good yet.
The defense is certainly making plays that should be helping the offense. Forcing turnovers, and punts that lead to good field position and this is a great step in the right direction. It’s something the team wasn’t able to do last season. Unfortunately this year’s offense has been unable to capitalize on such opportunities. Once the offense begins to capitalize on such situations, the 49ers will look like a much better team, and once the defense gets some rest during the course of the game, due to better offensive play, they may be able to make the jump from good to great.
