We have heard that he will be the quarterback of the future for the 49ers. His strong arm and large body do not add up to prototype 49er, but still they stick by him. The question is though, is he capable? The 49ers made a great move this week in securing there quarterback situation. They signed former Eagle QB Ty Detmer. Naturally this makes you wonder what exactly the front office has in mind.
The 9ers have reported Detmer’s role will be to serve as a 3rd string QB and to teach Drukenmiller the ropes and maybe one day, even coach. This of course could not be farther from the truth. Detmer will come to the 49ers as the number two man. If Young were to go down, Detmer would most certainly assume the starting role. Ty is more experienced and know the 49ers system inside out. Not to mention that he has close ties with Mariucci and Morhinweg. These ties are what brought him to the 9ers in the first place.
Playing Detmer as #2 may not be a bad idea. He fits the 49ers system really well. He is a mobile QB with good decision making skills, instinct, and raw talent. It is for these reasons that fans can’t help but wonder who really is the 9ers QB of the future. If Young were to retire after this season, would Jim or Ty be the starter next year?
Drukenmiller is a great QB. He demonstrated that already, but are the 49ers behind him enough so that he will prosper. The only way a QB ever becomes great is through constant attention from those more experienced. Will we have another QB controversy? The race is most certainly on. Both QBs will push each other to the extreme every day. That is why this was such a great move. The 9ers are going to have 3 great QBs by the time Young steps aside.
