49ers Cut Roster To 65 August 28 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise THIS CONTENT IS COPYWRITED, REDISTRIBUTION OF IT (including copy/pasting it to a message board, forum or bbs) IS PROHIBITED AND COULD RESULT IN LEGAL ACTIONS - feel free to quote up to 1 paragraph providing a source link to http://www.49ersparadise.cjb.net is included Three days of intense roster cut downs, and the 49ers appear to be at the NFL limit. On Tuesday the team released linebacker Shane Elam and offensive lineman Chad Ward. Both players were injured. The team also placed Kevin Curtis and Josh Shaw on the injured reserve list. A final roster count is hard to get a hold of because of players with roster exemptions, but appears the 49ers 65 man roster is now completely assembled. Placing Josh Shaw on the injured reserve, likely means he won’t be ready for at least a couple more months. The 49ers have high hopes for the defensive tackle, but his recovery from ACL and MCL knee injuries is taking longer than expected. Cade McNown will likely be added to the injured reserve after his surgery too.
The 49ers will have just one more game to evaluate players who are on the fringe of making the team, and being released. The depth players will see lots of time against the Chargers tonight, and should be able to get all the game footage they need to evaluate these players.
