Team May Miss Cota, Costa September 03 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise THIS CONTENT IS COPYWRITED, REDISTRIBUTION OF IT (including copy/pasting it to a message board, forum or bbs) IS PROHIBITED AND COULD RESULT IN LEGAL ACTIONS - feel free to quote up to 1 paragraph providing a source link to http://www.49ersparadise.cjb.net is included Cutting the roster down to 53, the 49ers released two veteran players from their roster, in safety Chad Cota, and offensive lineman Dave Costa, that they may regret the release of later this season. The team however, has by no means finalized their roster, and did alert these two players that they may wish to bring them back at a later date. In keeping so many linebackers, running backs and place kickers, the team had to part ways with Chad Cota. Cota was added this summer when rookie Kevin Kurtis suffered a season ending injury at the safety position. Cota didn’t beat out Ronnie Heard for the teams third safety spot, and unfortunately became expendable. The veteran safety is a very solid player, and given that the 49ers defensive backfield is still trying to prove its self, they really could have used his veteran presence. Cota instead becomes a free agent. The team went with youth on its offensive line keeping Kyle Kosier over Dave Costa. Costa is clearly the more polished of the two right now - but when considering long term potential the team gave the nod to Kosier.
The 49ers offensive line is banged up as it is. In going with the youth here, the 49ers will have to hope that nobody on the line gets seriously injured. Kosier clearly has a long ways to go before he is fully ready to play in the NFL. Costa on the other hand, could have been a dependable depth player right off the bat.
