Chad Cota To Pay Second Visit August 13 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise THIS CONTENT IS COPYWRITED, REDISTRIBUTION OF IT (including copy/pasting it to a message board, forum or bbs) IS PROHIBITED AND COULD RESULT IN LEGAL ACTIONS - feel free to quote up to 1 paragraph providing a source link to http://www.49ersparadise.cjb.net is included The 49ers received the bad news on Kevin Curtis yesterday. Curtis is expected to miss 8-10 weeks, which puts his return to the team in October. The 49ers have just three healthy safeties on their roster, and while they aren’t panicking, they are beginning to look at the same free agent market they were looking at when they signed Tony Parrish this off-season. Chad Cota, who spent from 1999 to 2001 with the Colts will pay the 49ers a visit today. It will be Cota’s second tryout with the team. The veteran safety would be a very nice addition to the defensive backfield but would be costly, and would have a heck of a lot to learn in a very limited time. I think the 49ers will try and get a deal done with Cota. I don’t think they have the confidence in a healthy Al Blades (although he is not healthy yet) or the confidence that John Keith can get healthy and so I think the team will try and sign Cota to a deal that has very little up front cash. From there, if Cota is impressive the 49ers win, and if Keith or Blades beats him out, they wont suffer to much from partying ways with the free agent.
The team is also toying with the idea of letting Rashad Holman play a little at safety. Personally I think Cota would add tremendous depth to a position the 49ers were once very deep at.
