While the miss was certainly on a longer kick than the potential game winner last week, it does beg the question as to whether the team should give rookie Jeff Chandler his shot. Cortez started out pretty hot this season, starting in the second game of the season, Cortez put together a streak of 13 consecutive field goals - a career high, but like last season when Cortez started out hot, things are quickly falling apart.
The 49ers drafted Jeff Chandler as insurance against Jose Cortez, they were essentially betting on Cortez, who couldn’t nail a touchback if he was given a bionic leg, to fail. How many field goals will Cortez have to miss before the 49ers consider starting Chandler? Unfortunately, we don’t know the answer to that but if he does turn things around quick, he’ll be out of a job sooner rather than later.
