The 49ers made some roster moves recently that have impacted their salary cap standings. The team released some players, that likely were not affecting the cap, but they did sign Jim Flanigan and add Giovanni Carmazzi to their roster. As such, the team now stands at $5.19 million under the cap.

The NFL has allocated the majority of the 49ers’ salary cap room (approximately $3.5 million) to the signing of their drafted players. A player like Mike Rumph will likely make about $3 million this season including all his bonuses, but the 49ers also have no second round pick, so they should be able to hit this figure with relative ease.

Even after signing all their rookies, the 49ers would still have room to add a player or too. Willie Jackson’s name continues to be passed around, but the 49ers may simply opt to keep that money available in the case of an injury during the season.

It is also expected that the 49ers restructure the contract of Reggie McGrew, and they should gain some further salary cap relief via this method. Still the team is in much better shape than it has been in recent history.
