Punter Decided August 15 2002 By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise THIS CONTENT IS COPYWRITED, REDISTRIBUTION OF IT (including copy/pasting it to a message board, forum or bbs) IS PROHIBITED AND COULD RESULT IN LEGAL ACTIONS - feel free to quote up to 1 paragraph providing a source link to http://www.49ersparadise.cjb.net is included While the place kicking duel remains undecided, the 49ers did manage to settle their punting competition before the end of training camp. Jason Baker is the only punter left on the roster, after the team parted ways with Andrew Bayes yesterday. Baker spent the entire 2001-02 season on the 49ers squad. His experience in kicking in the NFL, along with in the swirling wind of the 49ers stadium allowed him to hold on to his starting position.
The 49ers may still audition some free agent punters to keep challenging Baker, but the decision to go with Baker for the second consecutive season seems to have already been made. While Baker doesn’t have the deepest kicks, he does have excellent control over the ball and is quite reliable.
