As a 49ers nut, I read, watch, and listen to just about everything I can get my hands on related to the 49ers. When given the opportunity to review San Francisco 49ers: Where Have You Gone, by Matt Maiocco I jumped at the opportunity. On the superficial level, this book is a very quick read. My first read too just two and a half hours, and while I am a slightly faster reader than most, the book is certainly a quick study.
The version I received was a hard cover book with fairly big writing and nice sized black and white photo’s of the players reported on in the book. The book has a handy contents that allows you to flip from player to player if you do not want to read through it sequentially. I chose to read through the book sequentially, and there is some benefit to this if you are a younger reader like myself who may not remember the historic greats to the same extent as some of the more veteran fans.
The book is written by Matt Maiocco who is a regular beat writer for the Press Democrat. Maiocco is well regarded for his opinions on the 49ers, and has done an excellent job of tying together some of the 49ers greats and … not so greats … as he details what these former 49ers are doing today.
Among the highlights of the book are chapters on Joe “The Jet” Perry, Y.A. Tittle, Hugh McElhenny, Bob St. Clair, R.C. Owens, Charlie Krueger, John Brodie, Dave Wilcox, Dwight Clark, Joe Montana, Keena Turner, Roger Craig, Guy McIntyre, Tom Rathman, Gary Plummer and Steve Young. Maiocco does an excellent job of detailing how each player in the book contributed to the 49ers in their own unique ways. He also connects each player with a part of the team’s history as he moves from the past to the present.
Maiocco has put together a really solid read for 49ers fans. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a quick read on some of the 49ers former stars…and “not so star” players. The book is also a great way to brush up on 49ers history, and to learn about what some fan favourites are doing today.
