Andy Benoit’s Touchdown 2006 really is “everything you need to know about the NFL this year” … or at least, everything you need to know that has not happened after the publication of the book. Despite it being 3 games into the season already, I found the book to be highly informative, and a necessary read for every NFL fan.

Benoit is a young author, a freshman – but do not let age fool you. Touchdown 2006 is his 10th NFL preview book. Benoit leaves know stone unturned as he takes an inside look at each team in the NFL, and addresses the “state of the union” so to speak. ESPN’s Chris Berman commented: “A book written for a football fan by a true football fan. Andy Benoit has done it again!” Others, including Steve Sabol president of NFL films hold Benoit’s work in high regard as well.

When I began reading Touchdown 2006, I really wondered – what could Benoit offer that I had not read already? Most people know that I read more about the NFL, and in particular, the 49ers than just about anybody – but it only took 5 pages for the book to fully engage my thoughts. “Every Man’s Prevent Defense” an article describing the interaction between men and women on football Sunday provided a level of uniqueness I was not expecting. I literally laughed out loud as Benoit presented seven pro-football watching arguments that all fed-up wives, girlfriends, and mothers need to hear. This article alone makes purchasing the book worth while.

Benoit begins his book with an overview of off-season changes to the league office, and throughout the league. He writes an excellent piece explaining the ins and outs of some of the more common injuries that plague NFL players and he highlights key transactions, rookie acquisitions, and coaching changes before jumping in to an in-depth team-by-team analysis. Despite some of the information being time sensitive, the overall package of information is among the most all encompassing efforts I have seen, and includes predictions for the upcoming season. Benoit is clearly not afraid of forecasting the NFL, knowing full well the odds are stacked against him in having success.

In the 49ers preview, Benoit writes: “Do you know what their kicker Joe Nedney did for them in the middle of [last] season? He scored 43 points – in a row! The kicker was their Kobe Bryant. The 43 points in a row were the most consecutive points for any one player since 2000”. It is precisely this type of writing that held my intrigue through the nearly 200 pages of jam packed football content.

Touchdown 2006 was a way better read than I was expecting, and one that I whole heartedly recommend to every football fan out there. I am already anticipating what Benoit will have to say about this year’s NFL, and in particular the 49ers. Fortunately though, I can get a preview of his insight by visiting touchdown2006.com.
