Alex should do the things that are in his NFL job description.

Therefore, don't ride motorcycles without wearing a helmet, don't get arrested, etc...

Any other speculation is just focusing on football stuff he's already supposed to do.

Kezar is right. And Alex needs to anticipate were the receiver will be before the receiver makes the break. Alex needs to be in Santa Clara throwing passes all spring to our receivers. Alex needs reps.... Cool

Taking the "calculated risk' ... which is an extension of anticipating WR position.

Alex needs TIME to pass the ball. He's getting better but was sacked like 35 times last year. His rating is getting better it's not the gold standard (74.Cool 16TD/16 int but he is getting better i expect somewere around 24td's and 12 int next year. As far as what he needs to work on maybe a bit more time with his WR's in the offseason he needs to get on the same page with all of the WR's and TE's. He is going to be good REAL good.

He need to be able to read defenses and see the entire field, hopefully that will come with time. And he needs to have Snyder do a better job of pass protecting than Harris did and he needs for Heitmann to bulk up a bit and get stronger in the middle so Smith can count on being able to step up in the pocket without being hit in the face with Heitmann's helment coming backwards.
Smith showed some signs of getting better but he all too often missed seeing wide open receivers.

Agree find the open receiver (he missed several last year) and that will come with time.  He should also start spending as much time with Lelie as he did with A. Bryant last spring/summer and shave those goofy side-burns.

Reading a defence, checking off his receivers, reaction time, game management, accuracy and running away from who ever Kwame Harris is blocking.

LOL - no doubt. But seriously, I just want him to be able to complete passes to open receivers. That would be a giant step forward.

I think the biggest thing he needs to work on is his progressions and knowing when to check off his different options. Of course this goes hand in hand with reading the defense. This is something where Norv would have been a big help, but hopefully the rest of the offensive staff can help Alex with this as well.

I agree that he needs to get better at reading defense's and his progressions.......and he did seem to miss seeing the open receivers a few times last season. He is still young and will continue to improve though......and I am glad the system didn't change again this year......that familiarity should be helpful.  LOL Kwame's improvement or replacement wouldn't hurt either. Smith's greatest failure last year was in anticipation and trusting his WRs.

He always waited for a WR to get well open before he threw the ball.  On a timing route, the ball has to be out before the WR makes his break.  Too many times a receiver was waving his hands before Smith wound up to throw the ball.

By far and away his biggest need for improvement.

I still say he needs to know when to take risks with the ball.  Sometimes I felt he didn't try and make the play, just accepted that it would be a tough play to make and tossed it away.  That's the right move often, but you gotta take that risk if you want to get good at it, and be great not just good.

Alex Smith needs protection on the right side of the offensive line.  Kwame Harris is a joke!  When are we going to wake the heck up?
Adam Snyder needs to be the legitimate starter and Harris benched or released.  Alex also needs to find a repor with his receivers in Arnaz Battle and now Ashlie Lelie.
He has to take more calculated risks and break the pocket more often.  He seems to thrive while on the move.  I think he'll make even more improvements in his third year once the weapons are in place and he is more secure behind a healthy line.  Two tight end sets would be yet another option I think that needs to be utilized along with keeping what Norv Turner has started here so far.

Alex and his supporting cast are really going to be challenged this year by Defense's stacking the box because of gore's success.
It is going to be up to Alex and others to make those defense's pay for it too. It is also going to be important for Hostler to be creative
and design quick plays for Alex to execute.

I dont know if anyone has mentioned this, but I'm excited because I think Smith is only going to get better playing a better secondary in practice day in and day out. Think about the difference that can make. Last year it most of being like practicing against high school players only to play college level defenders on Saturday. Ok so maybe I'm exaggerating a little.

i like that point an awful lot.   to play like champions you got to practice like champions and having top notch players feeds into that notion.

Thanks! Its probably been my only one..... Undecided

So what are the expectations for Smith this year? Personally I would like to see him be a little more accurate down the field and stop staring down receivers. I think he missed a lot of open receivers last year because he was only able to focus on his first and maybe second option. He still hasn't proven he can win a game thru the air (when the run breaks down). I dont expect him to play like Brees or Rivers, but I do expect him to play well enough that teams respect our passing game.

goes along the same lines of having  Rice on offense

our DB's and safeties had that much better of a workout having to go up against Rice, taylor, jones and of course the greatest of all times montana

or would it be that much sweeter?

The upcomming season will be Smith's 3rd and, if history is any judge, the season in which greatness emerges, if it is there.  The honeymoon is over, our expectations should be very high...no more room for excuses (but he's so young) or rationalization (oh just give him another year or it's Kwame's fault).

I would have to agree with some of the other posters. Alex can not reach his full potential as an NFL quarterback unless he is confident in the pocket and if he constantly has to check OL blocking while going through his progressions he will never be comfortable.

Alex needs to open his eyes to aesthetics (not just athletics). Did you get a load of the argyle tie he is wearing in the photo of the Hedge Funds Care dinner (on the 49ers site)? He's a nerd. Yeh, I know, nerds will inherit the earth.
