WALLY YONAMINE: THE MAN WHO CHANGED JAPANESE BASEBALL
By: Rob Fitts
Although the book "WALLY YONAMINE: THE MAN WHO CHANGED JAPANESE BASEBALL" is mainly about baseball (as the name would suggest), it's facinating to learn than Yonamine also played for the 49ers. Yonamine had a major impact on baseball in Japan, but he was also a remarkable football player, and perhaps more importantly a remarkable man. Although the sections about his time with the 49ers in this book are kept brief, I found myself extremely engaged with the novel, and unable to put it down.
Author Rob Fitts is known for writing about sports. He does not dissapoint in this biographical tail. He provides a great deal of context from history, football, and of course baseball to help the reader understand the trial and tribulations Yonamine encountered throughout his life. Although I am a general sports fan, I am not a huge baseball fan, and nevertheless flew through the book wondering how it would all unfold.
After reading Fitts' work, there is no doubt in my mind that Yonamine did change Japanese Baseball. He likely also had a significant impact on the American Game, scouting, and coaching across other leagues and nations. His time with the 49ers though short, was important, and helped build Wally into an all around player. If you do not know who Yonamine is, or if you do, and want to understand how big an impact he had on professional sports, I strongly recommend this book. It is not only entertaining but full of great historical sports information.
You can purchase the book from Amazon via the link below or from the 49ers Paradise bookstore.
